The global mining industry has recorded a second straight annual increase in worker fatalities, according to the latest safety performance report released by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). The data highlights mounting challenges to worker safety despite long-standing efforts to reduce risks across mining operations worldwide.
In 2024, ICMM member companies—representing roughly one-third of the global mining and metals sector—reported a total of 42 worker deaths, up from 36 in 2023 and 33 in 2022. The findings mark a concerning shift from what had been a steady downward trend in mining-related fatalities.
Mobile equipment and transportation incidents were the leading cause of fatalities, responsible for 9 of the 42 deaths. Another five fatalities were linked to fall-of-ground accidents, underscoring persistent safety issues in underground mining environments.
South Africa recorded the highest number of fatalities among ICMM members, with 15 deaths, accounting for 35% of the total. However, the report also noted that nine member companies recorded zero fatalities in 2024, a sign of progress in parts of the industry.
“No one should have to risk their life to do their job. This remains our irrevocable starting point, our standard, and our shared responsibility,” said Rohitesh Dhawan, ICMM President and CEO.

In response to the rising numbers, ICMM is updating its guidance on critical control management, aiming to better align safety practices with current operational hazards. The council is also accelerating its Innovation for Cleaner, Safer Vehicles (ICSV) initiative, which seeks to eliminate fatalities from vehicle interactions through advanced technology and automation.

Beyond physical safety, ICMM is strengthening its focus on psychological health and safety, recognizing the strong connection between mental well-being and workplace safety outcomes. The organization is also enhancing transparency and peer learning, encouraging member companies to more effectively share insights and lessons learned from fatal incidents.
Since 2012, ICMM has published annual safety data as part of its commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement. Its membership includes major global miners such as BHP, Rio Tinto, Anglo American, Newmont, and Teck Resources.
