Jujuy has unveiled a new lithium project with CNGR that seeks inclusion under Argentina’s RIGI, featuring a 22,000-tonne annual plant and an innovation laboratory.

Argentina’s Jujuy province is moving forward with a new lithium project that aims to qualify for the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI), reinforcing the province’s appeal for new investment in one of the country’s most strategic mining sectors.

The announcement was made by Governor Carlos Sadir following a meeting with representatives of Chinese company CNGR Advanced Material Co., Ltd. and communities from Jama, Olaroz and El Toro, underscoring growing interest in expanding lithium production in northern Argentina.

Lithium project in Jujuy includes a 22,000-tonne annual plant

The project includes the expansion of lithium production in Jama and northern Olaroz, along with the construction of a plant in the Salar de Jama with an estimated capacity of 22,000 tonnes per year.

According to provincial authorities, the company has already submitted the Environmental Impact Report, and the project is currently undergoing technical evaluation, a key step toward possible development.

This advance fits within Jujuy’s broader strategy to strengthen its role in Argentina’s lithium value chain, at a time when global demand for energy transition minerals remains high.

CNGR, JEMSE and CONICET to develop lithium innovation laboratory

In addition to its production component, the proposal also includes a technology and training dimension. The project envisions the creation of a joint laboratory involving CNGR, JEMSE and CONICET, aimed at driving innovation and improving processes across the lithium value chain.

The facility is also expected to serve as a hands-on training space for chemical engineers and students, helping connect emerging talent with the industry and strengthening the province’s base of specialized human capital.

In that sense, the initiative is designed not only to expand production capacity, but also to build local technical and technological capabilities linked to the sector’s growth.

Jujuy seeks to strengthen its role as a lithium development hub

Provincial authorities said this type of initiative can help generate employment, strengthen local development and consolidate a more sustainable growth model.

They also stressed that the articulation between private investment, a state-owned company, scientific institutions and professional training can become a key lever in positioning Jujuy as an important player in lithium production at both the national and international levels.

With this latest move, the province continues to deepen its strategy to attract investment and expand its participation in an industry seen as crucial for the future of global energy and technology supply chains.
